Payment fraud

Fake UPI KYC freeze

Callers say a UPI or bank account is frozen unless you scan a QR code or install an app.

How Scam Works?

This conversation is invented. It shows the pattern so you can recognise it. It is not a real message, and nothing here should be replied to or paid.

Demonstration

Phone call, then SMS

Unknown number, saved as “UPI KYC desk”

  1. Scam message

Your UPI is frozen because KYC expired. It will close in 30 minutes.

  2. What you might say

The app still opens. Who is this?

  3. Scam message

National payments desk. I am sending a QR. Scan it to release the freeze. Do not call your branch.

A bank does not unlock UPI by making you scan a QR or install a remote-access app.
