Online and Social Media Related Crime

Fake/Impersonating Profile

A social media profile uses someone else’s name and photo. Friends or customers think it is the real person.

How Scam Works?

This chat is made up. It shows how the trick usually sounds. It is not a real message. Do not reply, and do not send money.

A new profile with a friend’s photo

  1. Scam message

This is my new account. I am stuck. Please send ₹5,000 to this UPI. I will return it tonight.

  2. What you might say

I will call you on your usual number.

  3. Scam message

My phone is dead. Do not call. Just send it. I am embarrassed to ask anyone else.

Do not send money or a login code because a profile photo looks right. Check on a call, using the number you already have.

  1. 01

    They copy a real person

The name, photo, and a few personal details are taken from a real profile.

  2. 02

    They message that person’s friends

The story is urgent. A hospital, a lost phone, or a payment that must happen now.

  3. 03

The money goes to a stranger

The UPI name is not your friend. After you pay, the profile disappears or asks for more.
